Jangtaesan Natural Recreation Forest: A Watercolor Painted by Green Trees and Clear Skies

by norobot 2024. 12. 16.

The Jangtaesan Natural Recreation Forest is a place where you can enjoy the beauty of the green forest under the clear sky. Located in Daejeon, this recreation forest is the first private forest in Korea created by an individual, offering visitors a serene natural experience and breathtaking scenery. A visit here will leave you with unforgettable memories.

History and Overview

The Jangtaesan Natural Recreation Forest in Daejeon was the first private forest in Korea, created over 20 years by the late Mr. Im Chang-bong. It first opened in 1994 and was acquired by the city of Daejeon in 2002, which renovated its interior. It has been operating in its current form since 2006. The forest includes exotic trees like Metasequoia, ginkgo trees, and Korean pine, planned and planted to give it an exotic appearance.

Skywalk Through the Forest

In Jangtaesan Natural Recreation Forest, the clear sunshine and fresh forest air greet visitors first. Walking past the parking lot in front of the bus stop at the entrance, you will find yellow ginkgo leaves carpeting the path and pine trees standing in a row along the way. Visiting during the peak of autumn makes the scenery even more beautiful.

As you reach the multipurpose ground and parking lot at the foot of the hill, you begin your walk through the forest. The surrounding forest, mixed with colorful autumn leaves and green conifers, is vast and beautiful. Following the direction toward the 'recreation center and management office,' you will reach the ecological pond and arrive at the management office. From there, you take the arched gate named 'Forest Adventure,' where the railing gradually leads you upward. Soon, you connect to the skywalk that passes through the Metasequoia trees, and the 27-meter-high sky tower appears.

Metasequoia Forest Filled with Music and Light

Returning to the management office, follow the paved road toward the mountain. The mixed forest of maple trees shines in various colors under the autumn sunlight. After walking for a few minutes, you will meet a dense Metasequoia forest. While natural beauty is often considered the best, this forest is an exception. As sunlight penetrates the forest, the shadows cast between the evenly planted Metasequoia tree trunks create a unique atmosphere.

Passing by the snack bar and walking for about 10 minutes, you will find a forest classroom with benches and wooden beds. Leaving this behind, you reach a three-way intersection. Following the signpost indicating 'Observation Deck 0.9km,' you continue along a marble walkway that serves as a guide. As the observation deck approaches, the path climbs steeply up to the peak. Reaching the observation deck after a sweaty climb, you will find a pavilion called Jangtaeru and a viewing deck overlooking the cliff. The Jang'an Reservoir and the surrounding low mountains spread out in front of you.

Places to Visit: Hanbat Arboretum

Hanbat Arboretum, located across the Expo Science Park along Gapcheon, is a large urban green space. It is divided into Dongwon and Seowon outdoor areas and a tropical plant greenhouse indoor area. There are 33 gardens, including a small lake, a wildflower garden, a rose of Sharon garden, a shrub garden, a magnolia garden, a medicinal plant garden, and a fruit tree garden. Its accessibility is excellent due to its location in the city center, and it has well-maintained walking paths. For groups of 10 or more, a reservation through the website allows for a guided tour by a docenet. Dongwon and the tropical plant greenhouse are closed on Mondays, and Seowon is closed on Tuesdays.
